What Sells on Merch by Amazon: Q4 2026 Bestseller Data

·Updated ·12 min read

Most advice about what sells on Amazon Merch on Demand (formerly Merch by Amazon) is anecdotal: a screenshot here, a lucky shirt there. So we looked at the numbers instead — twice. On October 13, 2026, we took every verified Merch T-shirt MerchScout tracks that had a current Best Sellers Rank — 727 in the US and 552 in the UK, officially licensed brands excluded, because a normal seller cannot upload those. Where it helps, we compare with our first snapshot from September 29.

Four questions came out of it that matter for anyone uploading this quarter: what a BSR actually means in sales, how old today's winners are, which prices they use, and when this season's hits went live.

TL;DR: In our data, a US Merch shirt ranked better than ~250,000 almost always sold 50+ a month — and as Q4 got busier, that line moved further out. In the UK the line sits near 100,000. One in five of the best-ranked US shirts is under three months old, but more than one in four is over four years old. The best-ranked US shirts most often cost $16.99, which earns $1.33 per sale in the Creator royalty group — $19.99 earns $2.44. And the earlier a 2026 Halloween shirt went live, the better it ranked before the holiday.

About this data: Two one-day snapshots of the Merch shirts MerchScout tracked with a current rank: September 29, 2026 (316 in the US, 70 in the UK) and October 13, 2026 (727 and 552). Numbers are from October 13 unless we say otherwise. Our tracking leans toward the themes and events we follow, so read the numbers as direction, not as totals for the whole marketplace.

What does a Merch by Amazon BSR mean in sales?

Amazon does not publish sales numbers, but it does show a label on busy listings: "50+ bought in past month", "100+", "200+" and so on. Put that label next to the Best Sellers Rank of the same shirt and you get a practical translation table.

BSR (US, Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry)ShirtsWith a "bought" label (Oct 13)Sep 29Typical label
Better than 50,00019100%100%500+
50,000 – 100,00054100%96%300+
100,000 – 250,00023299%95%200+
250,000 – 500,00014083%65%100+
500,000 – 1,000,00011022%8%50+ to 100+
Worse than 1,000,0001722%1%—

The label starts at 50 a month, so the drop-off is the useful part. In our data, a US Merch shirt ranked better than roughly 250,000 almost always sold 50+ a month; past 1,000,000 almost none did. In between, the line moves with the season: two weeks into October, 83% of the shirts between 250,000 and 500,000 carried the label, up from 65% at the end of September, and 22% between 500,000 and 1,000,000, up from 8%. That fits Q4: with more shoppers, the same rank stands for more sales.

The UK is a much smaller market, so the same rank means fewer sales:

BSR (UK, Fashion)ShirtsWith a "bought" labelTypical label
Better than 50,0004990%50+ to 100+
50,000 – 100,0007654%50+
100,000 – 250,000962%—
Worse than 250,0003310%—

In the UK, a shirt needs to rank better than about 100,000 to sell 50 a month — and even between 50,000 and 100,000 only about half do. On September 29 those shares were 77% and 23%, so the UK is getting busier too.

How to use it: when you validate a niche, look at the ranks of the shirts already selling in it. A US niche whose best shirts sit around 300,000 has real but modest demand; one with several shirts under 100,000 is proven. In the UK, look for shirts ranked better than about 100,000 instead. Our guide on how to validate a print-on-demand niche walks through the rest of that check.

Do new uploads still reach the top?

Yes — but they are the minority. The shelf is dominated by listings that have been collecting sales for years.

Listing ageTop 100 (US)Top 100 (UK)
90 days or less19%8%
91 days – 1 year15%18%
1 – 2 years17%23%
2 – 4 years21%24%
More than 4 years28%27%
Median age~23 months~24 months

Two things stand out. First, one in five of the 100 best-ranked US shirts in our data is less than three months old, so a fresh upload can break in — in the UK it is fewer than one in ten. Second, more than one in four is over four years old, up from one in five at the end of September as older Halloween shirts climbed back. A good Merch design is not a one-season product; it is an asset that keeps selling while its sales history keeps it visible.

That is the case for uploading consistently rather than in bursts: every design you upload this year is also a candidate for next year's shelf. It is also why picking the right niche matters more than chasing whatever is at the top today — see how to find low-competition niches for where fresh uploads have room.

What price do well-selling Merch shirts use?

Among the 100 best-ranked US shirts, $16.99 (19 shirts), $17.99 (17) and $19.99 (12) were the most common prices, with a median of $16.99. Across all 727 US shirts, $19.99 was the single most common price and the median was $17.99 — the very top leans a little cheaper. In the UK top 100, £13.99 (18), £17.49 (17) and £12.99 (14) led, with a median just under £15.

Price matters because of how Amazon pays. Merch on Demand pays US royalties in three groups — Creator (standard), Plus (at least 15% of your unit sales from traffic you drive yourself, 2× Creator) and Premium (at least 35%, 2.16× Creator); Plus and Premium also need at least 10 US sales a month. The amounts below follow Amazon's own royalty figures:

US list priceShirts in the US top 100Creator royaltyPlus royalty
$15.996$0.96$1.93
$16.9919$1.33$2.67
$17.9917$1.70$3.41

£12.9914£0.61
£13.9918£1.26
£14.998£1.92
£17.4917£3.57

The spread is steep. Moving a US shirt from $16.99 to $19.99 raises the Creator royalty from $1.33 to $2.44 — 83% more per sale for $3 more at checkout. In the UK, £17.49 instead of £13.99 earns almost three times as much per sale. At $15.99 or £12.99 you keep less than a dollar or a pound. If a design sells steadily at a low price, testing a higher one is often the cheapest profit you will find.

Which Q4 themes are selling in mid-October?

Seasonal shirts do not wait for their holiday. On October 13, 12 of the 20 best-ranked US shirts in our data were Halloween designs and five more were Breast Cancer Awareness designs for Pink October. The best-ranked US shirt overall was a Halloween design from 2023 with 1,000+ sales in the past month. Halloween shirts were also moving: in the week before, a third of them climbed clearly in rank, against fewer than one in ten of all other shirts.

The UK is different. Only 6 of its 100 best-ranked shirts were Halloween designs — a much smaller season there.

One caveat, in the spirit of honest data: our tracking follows upcoming events more closely, so seasonal themes are over-represented in this sample. Read the theme mix as "these are clearly selling now", not as a market-share chart.

The more useful signal is when those seasonal winners were uploaded.

When were this year's Halloween hits uploaded?

Of the 117 US Halloween shirts in our data, 66 were uploaded in earlier years — as far back as 2017 — and are selling again this October. Seasonal designs pay out every year, and last year's upload is this year's head start.

For the 2026 uploads, the month they went live made a clear difference to where they stood two and a half weeks before Halloween:

Halloween shirts uploadedShirtsMedian rank on Oct 13 (US)
In earlier years66~109,000
July 202610~144,000
August 202613~185,000
September 202620~369,000
October 20267over 1,000,000

The earlier a 2026 Halloween shirt went live, the better it ranked. July uploads, 13 to 17 weeks ahead — around the 16 weeks our seasonal calendar recommends for major events — sat close to the older classics, in the range where almost every shirt sells 50+ a month. September uploads ranked more than twice as deep, and October uploads had barely started. Part of that is simply time on the shelf, and that is exactly the point: early uploads have time to collect the first sales and reviews that ranking rewards before demand peaks. In our data, the strongest new Halloween shirt of the year went live on July 8 and carried a 1,000+ label in mid-October.

But late is not hopeless: one shirt uploaded on September 4 already ranked around 48,000 with 300+ sales a month. It simply started with less runway. Breast Cancer Awareness shows the same pattern of older listings: 24 of its 42 US shirts were from earlier years.

What does this mean for Christmas 2026?

Sixteen weeks before Christmas was early September, so the "ideal" window for Christmas 2026 is already behind us. In mid-October, the four best-ranked US Christmas shirts in our data were all from earlier years, and every 2026 Christmas upload still ranked worse than 600,000; in the UK, all 11 Christmas shirts with a rank were older listings. The Halloween data says two things about what to do now:

  1. Upload anyway, and upload soon. Christmas is about ten weeks away in mid-October — roughly the runway Halloween's August uploads had, and those ranked around 185,000 before the holiday. Every week you wait moves you toward the September and October rows of that table.
  2. Think in two seasons. Most seasonal winners are older listings. A Christmas design uploaded now that sells modestly this year is a much stronger listing next November. For 2027, the upload deadlines by event are already mapped.

How MerchScout fits in

The numbers in this article come from MerchScout's What's Selling Now: real, verified Merch on Demand shirts with their Best Sellers Rank, refreshed every night, with licensed brands filtered out — top ranked, climbing fast, just launched and most bought. It shows you what buyers are actually paying for, so you can pick niches with proof instead of guesses.

The other half is what to design next. MerchScout's Daily Design Radar delivers fresh, vetted niche and design ideas every day, timed to the seasonal calendar — so you are working on Christmas and Valentine's ideas while there is still runway, not after. Use the bestsellers for inspiration and build your own angle; never copy another seller's design.

Frequently asked questions

What BSR does a Merch by Amazon shirt need to sell 50 a month?

In our US data, almost every shirt ranked better than about 250,000 in Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry carried Amazon's "bought in past month" label, which starts at 50+. In mid-October, 83% of the shirts between 250,000 and 500,000 had it and 22% between 500,000 and 1,000,000; past 1,000,000 almost none did. In the UK the label stops much earlier, at around 100,000.

Do new Merch by Amazon uploads still make it to the top?

Yes, but they are the minority. One in five of the 100 best-ranked US shirts we looked at was less than three months old, while more than one in four was over four years old. In the UK, only 8 of the top 100 were under three months old.

When should you upload Merch by Amazon designs for Christmas?

Aim for about 16 weeks before the event. In our 2026 Halloween data, the earlier a shirt went live, the better it ranked before the holiday: July uploads had a median rank of about 144,000 in mid-October, September uploads about 369,000 and October uploads over 1,000,000. Later uploads can still sell, but they start with less runway.
